ProtonMail
Connect ProtonMail using ProtonMail Bridge. Requires the Bridge app running locally.
ProtonMail Bridge Required
ProtonMail's end-to-end encryption means it doesn't support standard IMAP. You need ProtonMail Bridge running on your machine — it creates a local IMAP server that Pontius connects to.
Install ProtonMail Bridge
- Download from proton.me/mail/bridge
- Install and log in with your ProtonMail account
- Keep Bridge running (set it to start at login)
Get Bridge Credentials
- Open ProtonMail Bridge
- Click on your account
- Copy the Password shown — this is NOT your ProtonMail password
Add to Pontius
$ pontius- Select Add Account
- Provider:
protonmail - Enter your ProtonMail email
- Paste the Bridge password (not your ProtonMail password)
- Wait for "Account connected!"
Verify It Works
$ pontius listYou should see your recent emails. If you do, you're done.
Bridge Must Stay Running
ProtonMail Bridge must be running whenever you use Pontius with your ProtonMail account. Set it to start at login so you don't have to think about it.
Troubleshooting
Connection refused
- Make sure ProtonMail Bridge is running.
- Check that Bridge shows your account as connected.
Authentication failed
- Use the Bridge password, not your ProtonMail password.
- The Bridge password is shown in the Bridge app under your account.
